Back Story

When Heather Monahan was 10 and Erin Monahan was 7, their mother, father, maternal grandmother and maternal grandfather will killed in a private plane crash.  They were left an eight bedroom townhouse in Beacon Hill, Boston and a $26 million trust fund, to be shared equally between the two and their nineteen year old maternal aunt, Caitlyn O'Reilly, who was given custody of the girls.  Caitlyn (Auntie Kate) was attending Boston College at the time as an Art History major.  Heather and Erin were attending a private prep school (the fictional Marquardt Academy).

Heather was a brilliant but unruly child who rebelled against the authority and social norms of the school.  Upon graduating, she left.  She would return to Auntie Kate every couple of years but was secretive about where she had been and what she had been doing.  She always seemed to have plenty of money.  She would stay for a few weeks and then disappear again.

Erin, on the other hand, was a well behaved, serious and shy child who had no difficulty graduating as Valedictorian at 16.  She received a PhD in Economics from MIT at 22 and when the story begins is about to graduate at the top of her class with an MBA from Harvard.  She lived with Caitlyn in the townhouse until she moved in at age 20 with Rob her boyfriend.  We had just graduated in Education from Boston University.

Caitlyn had intended to continue in graduate school with the aspiration of becoming a curator at an art museum.  However, she got sidetracked and became an insurance investigator specializing in art theft retrieval.  She actually preferred the more intellectually stimulating work of investigation.
